Clearly many users are WAY more skilled than I, but would really appreciate some basic info on how to embed video with in5 in InDesign and then test to see if it's working locally (through MAMP) on iPad. ANY tips would be appreciated: what file type? How to resize? Display options? How to test for iPad, iPhone, web?

The video should be in mp4 (with H.264 encoding).

You can place the video in InDesign using File > Place.

You can scale the video before placing it in InDesign (e.g., using the Adobe Media Encoder), or simply scale the frame within InDesign.

There's no "correct" video size, but here's what screencast.com recommends:

iPhone and Android Recommendations

Format h.264/AVC (Called MP4 in Camtasia Studio and Camtasia for Mac)
Encoding Profile Baseline
Level 3.0
Native Resolution 480 x 320
Maximum Supported Video Dimensions 640 x 480 can work Recommended: 360p (640 wide x 360 high)
Recommended Bitrate 1.5-2.5 Mbs

iPad Recommendations

Format h.264/AVC (Called MP4 in Camtasia Studio and Camtasia for Mac)
Encoding Profile Main
Level 3.1
Native Resolution 1024 x 768
Maximum Supported Video Dimensions Up to 720p (1280 wide x 720 high)
Recommended Bitrate 2.5-3 Mbs

You can use the iOS Simulator (along with MAMP) to test on the iPad and iPhone.

To test from the web, you can use Chrome or Safari and open the local file. Firefox works better with MAMP since it uses the Flash Player to playback the video and there are security restrictions on the local machine.
