If you're using a serial number (especially the root serial) it will only auto-create a user (and activate) if there is a free slot.

You can go into your online account and remove the old activation (or user) and you should be able to get it working from that point:

When I try to login I get an invalid email/password error. When I try and reset my password I get the following error - We couldn't find you in our system.

Have you deleted my account for some reason?
The only record I'm finding of your account (using the email address registered on this Exchange) is an old v2 license. The version you're using and the online account that you're attempting to access is for version 3 (released in January 2017).

Only v3 is compatible with the latest versions of InDesign CC.

You can easily upgrade with your old serial number (look for "migration discount" to get a large discount off the first year): https://ajarproductions.com/pages/products/in5/purchase.php
